Syntactic foam is composite materials synthesized by filling a metal, polymer, or ceramic matrix with hollow particles called microballoons. Current applications for syntactic foam include buoyancy modules for marine riser, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), and deep sea exploration.
Buoyancy for drilling riser plays a critical role in the dynamic performance of the riser string and often times becomes damaged during handling from vessel to land, vessel to vessel or in service due to the extreme loading conditions cause by inclement weather during drilling, recovery, or deployment process of the riser systems.
